PRAYING IN COMMUNITY
“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” - Matthew 18:20
Throughout the Gospels, our Lord encourages us time and time again to gather, pray, and connect through authentic relationship with each other. When we do so He promises to dwell with us there in those beautiful and intimate moments.
There are so many ways that our Lord and his bride the Church has shown us to pray as a community. During our Community Lectio nights we hope to use these gifts of prayer from our Lord and the Church to strengthen our relationships and deepen our young adult community. LECTIO DIVINALectio Divina, or Divine Reading, is a meditative way of praying with the Scriptures. In a community setting we pray Lectio Divina in a simple yet specific way. Through Lectio Divina we let go of our own expectations on the Scriptures and rest in the Sacred Heart, letting our Lord show us what it is he desires to share with us through His Word.
Step 1. We open the scriptures to the chosen passage, settle and calm ourselves, and we let go of the distractions before us. Step 2. Someone slowly and deliberately reads the passage, everyone else rests quietly either following along with their own bible or closes their eyes and listens to the words closely. Step 3. After waiting a time to let people process what they have heard, someone else slowly reads the passage again. While they read, everyone else in the community opens their hearts to receive a word or phrase from the passage that sticks out to them. Once the second reader has finished reading, everyone (one at a time) shares the word or phrase that stuck out to them. It is important to know that you do not have to share! If something doesn’t stick out to you this time feel free to remain silent and continue to receive from others. Step 4. Once enough time has passed where everyone has had time to share a word or phrase, a third reader reads the passage for a final time. Step 5. After this final reading, the community takes a moment in silence. Then the floor is open for people to share what they have received from the time in prayer together. This is an opportunity for people to share deeply and to reflect with each other about the scripture, how it touches their own lives, where it might be something they struggle with, how something new about the passage struck them this time around. Whatever is on the heart, this is a place for everyone to take time and share. Step 6. End in prayer. Once everyone has had time to share what is on their hearts or in their thoughts, a member of the community should end in a prayer of gratitude to the Lord for being present with them and showing them His Sacred Heart. |
